Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Observes the Operation Progress of the King’s Royally Initiated Laem Pak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project (LERD)

On 28 April 2021, at 12.30, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn observed the operation progress of the King’s Royally Initiated Laem Pak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project (LERD), Baan Laem District, Phetchaburi Province through an online channel.

The King’s Royally Initiated Laem Pak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project (LERD) was established in 1990 as to the initiation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great. The project aims to be a place where research and technology have been conducted in order to solve the environmental problems, e.g., solid waste and wastewater, based on the concept of “nature by nature” method.

From the Project’s operations over the past 30 years, the project has been performing several practical researches. There are 512 projects involved in in-depth researches on municipal wastewater treatment and solid waste. There are 558 academic research papers presented and approved in international arena. In addition, the Chaipattana Foundation, in cooperation with the Faculty of Environment, Kasetsart University, organized International Conference on Environment for 3 times with more than 1,000 participants, both Thais and foreigners. In 2021, the Project is planning to organize 2 International Conferences.

Furthermore, the Project has been acting as a regional study center for wastewater and solid waste treatment according to the royal initiative. The technologies applied at LERD project as well as environmental education are promoted and disseminated through various channels. The Project has been visited by more than 1.5 million visitors since 1996. There are also 23,000 people taking study visit and 410 organizations adopting the knowledge and technology at Project applying it in their own contexts for the utmost benefits.

The project is regarded as the second most popular bird watching location and ecotourism site in Thailand where people can visit and learn how to treat wastewater and solid waste.
